How do you judge the quality of great fitted or flat sheets? One of the biggest misperceptions I often hear from customers is that they believe high “thread count”, or the number of threads woven into a square inch of fabric, is naturally an indication of quality. This is a myth that’s been promulgated since the 1990’s. Today, you’ll see sheets that claim to be 800, 1000, or even 1500 thread count being sold, but in most cases manufacturers use creative math to boost these numbers. Even exposés in the news media haven’t done much to dispel the myths.
The truth is, thread count is only part of the story. A much more important indicator of quality of your sheets is the yarn. Egyptian cotton is generally recognized as the best in the world, known for its long staple (or fibers) that can be spun into smoother, stronger, much finer yarn. But there are many different types of imported Egyptian cotton. That’s why we exclusively work with manufacturers like Sferra and Matouk that source their cotton from the very best crops in the Nile River Valley, and have decades of expertise in selecting, weaving, and finishing their sheets. No matter which sheets you select from these manufacturers, you’ll be assured they’re the best.
Maintenance is an important consideration when buying sheets. If you’ll be purchasing sheets for a summer home, a yacht, or other places where maintenance such as ironing may be more challenging, consider an “easy care” blend of cotton and dacron. These sheets are just as beautiful as their 100% Egyptian cotton counterparts, but tend to be lighter to the touch, to breathe a little more efficiently, and to not need too much in the way of ironing or other maintenance.
One thing I encourage you to do is to visit a store that carries these sheets and feel them for yourself (and of course, you’re always welcome to visit our store on Forest Avenue in Locust Valley on Long Island).
