Down Mattress Pads & Duvets

Through the years, I’ve gotten a lot of questions about down. Here are some quick answers:

Is all down the same? Not at all. Look carefully at the label when you’re looking for a down comforter or pillow. Does it say 100% goose down? If not, your down may be a combination of goose down, duck down, and even feathers. 100% goose down will be on the label when the manufacturer has taken the time to separate the real down, with a fluffy, snowlike texture, from the feathers, resulting in a plush, luxurious feel.

How do I care for down? First, be sure to rotate your duvet from time to time--this will help ensure that the down is evenly distributed. As for washing down, contrary to popular belief, you should not dry clean down comforters or pillows. Be sure to take it to a laundromat with industrial-sized machines where the comforter can spread out, aerate, and be fully flushed with water and detergent. The hot air during the drying process will help reboot the comforter, ensure it is sterilized and help it regain its loft.

Ultimately when choosing down, your personal preference means a lot. Some people in colder climates might choose a comforter with higher fill power, made from geese in colder climates with better ability to insulate. Some with allergies may choose a down alternative. Ultimately, my best recommendation is to visit us in the store where you can feel different comforters for yourself.
